Beijing Red Cross Builds Public Safety Awareness for the Olympics

Beijing China April 25 2007 - The 2nd Beijing Red Cross International Work Seminar wrapped up in Beijing. Addressing public safety issues for the upcoming Olympics the seminar focused on the theme "Serving the Olympics: Emergency Preparedness and Response." Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) President Madam Peng Peiyun and Beijing Vice Mayor and Beijing Red Cross Society President Mr. Sun Anmin both made speeches at the seminar.

As a seminar sponsor Tencent will provide Beijing Red Cross with the Internet platform needed to advance the Red Cross' campaign of "humanity love and devotion."

Beijing Red Cross plays a key role in the 2008 Olympics providing training first aid and volunteer personnel in service of the games. Tencent Vice President and General Manager of Public Relations Ms. Liu Chang said "One main task of the Red Cross is to do education and advocacy to support disadvantaged groups and provide emergency services to protect people's life and health. As China's largest and most important Internet platform Tencent has the financial backing to support many Red Cross activities. Tencent can also use its Internet platform to link the Red Cross message to the Olympic spirit and encourage more people to participate in Red Cross activities."

Tencent's corporate vision is to "become the most respected Internet enterprise." This entails taking on more social responsibilities a goal that means good news for the Red Cross. In 2006 Tencent announced a CNY20 million investment to set up a charity foundation the first such foundation in China's Internet sector. In addition to helping those in need the company is also committed to promoting values of friendship and mutual support in society. One example is Tencent's employee volunteers association. To help build a harmonious society Tencent encourages its employees to take part in environmental protection community service cultural awareness and charity activities.

As Internet access becomes increasingly widespread information gathering and exchange have never been easier. In contrast to traditional communication methods the relative lack of national or cultural boundaries in cyberspace helps bring people together and echoes the all-embracing spirit of the Red Cross.

Tencent will provide information distribution interactive volunteer training platform and communication and exchange platform services for the Red Cross. A large charity organization Beijing Red Cross currently spans 1481 grassroots organizations 867000 members and 71000 volunteers. The organization declared its intent to make increased use of the Internet for news releases awareness building and day to day communications.
