Tencent Games, British Esports and Ukie Push for Public-Private Partnerships as 75% of Gen Z Call for Esports in Schools
Gen Z Passion Fuels UK Esports Boom, but Unclear Career Pathways and Financial Constraints Could Stall Industry Growth
Tencent Games, in collaboration with British Esports and Ukie, has released new research revealing a strong interest among Gen Z students in gaming and esports careers in the UK. Just over 40% of respondents are considering video game related fields, with more than 20% specifically drawn to esports (22%). However, sustainable growth of the UK esports industry requires industry collaboration, particularly as three-quarters of Gen Z students advocate for integrating esports into school curricula.
Despite the UK’s esports sector being projected to reach $304.4 million (£240.2m) by 2029, significant barriers could stall industry growth. Interestingly, 36% cited financial barriers and 33% identified unclear career pathways as key challenges to entering the sector, potentially hindering the industry’s ability to unlock its full potential.
Higher education is embracing esports, with 16 UK institutions currently offering 23-degree programmes, and 28 expected to offer 39 courses next year. As esports continues to grow, investing in grassroots initiatives and building a sustainable industry are essential to fulfilling Gen Z’s ambitions and positioning the UK as a global hub for esports.
The study, conducted by Censuswide, commissioned by Tencent Games, in collaboration with British Esports and Ukie, surveyed 2,000 UK Gen Z (aged 16-27) respondents interested in the creative and entertainment industry.
Key Findings:
- Esports education is on the rise: 75% of Gen Z support incorporating esports into school curricula, with 64% already engaged in esports-related academic activities. However, participation in esports within academic settings skews heavily toward men (76%) over women (55%), and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds engage less (36%) than their wealthier counterparts (76%).
- Essential skills identified for further development: Gen Z identifies teamwork (45%), strategic thinking (42%), and focus (40%) as essential skills for success in esports. Many are actively pursuing these competencies but need guidance in entering the industry.
- Barriers to entry persist: Financial barriers (36%), unclear career pathways (33%) and social stigma (28%) are the main obstacles for aspiring esports professionals.
Esports Careers: More Accessible Than Traditional Careers
The UK offers a strong environment for esports growth, with a thriving video game industry, established venues and a robust talent pool. Some 58% of respondents believe esports careers are more accessible than traditional fields like law or engineering.
However, geographic and demographic perceptions of accessibility can vary. Around 64% of those in London are far more likely to see esports as attainable compared to just 46% in the East Midlands. Addressing talent and skills gaps through grassroots initiatives, training and mentorship, will ensure equitable opportunities while delivering valuable skills to the economy.
